Bachelor of Laws (LLB)

This course provides a good foundation for those who intend to practice law as solicitors and barristers; however many others will find that it will enhance their careers. The aim of the programme is to cater for the diverse career interests of students, to enable them to develop critical awareness of the common law legal tradition. Students also gain knowledge on legal research methods and study skills.

Course structure
You take twelve subjects over three years or nine subjects if you gain entry as a graduate student, holding for example, a Bachelors degree from a recognised university in addition to the minimum requirements. The entire programme is offered according to Scheme A (12 subjects) of the University of London structure. According to this scheme, you will take four (4) subjects at each level and sitting, and you must pass all four before proceeding to the next level. Students have up to eight years to complete their degree and may, for example, take two years to complete the first year.

Assessment
Each unit is assessed by one three-hour unseen written examination.

Entry Requirements
An applicant must be at least 18 years of age at the time of enrolling for these courses with the University of London. You must have reached a competent level in Mathematics, and at least have achieved a grade C in a Mathematical subject at GCSE/GCE ‘O’ Level.

Additionally applicants should have attained       

  • Either two subjects at GCE 'A' level and at least three further subjects at GCSE/GCE 'O' level at Grade C or above
  • Or three subjects at GCE 'A' level (with one 'A' level at not less than Grade D)
  • Or three subjects at GCE 'A' level and one further subject at GCSE/GCE 'O' level at Grade C or above
  • Or two subjects at GCE 'A' level, plus two further subjects at GCE 'AS' level

English Language Requirement
All applicants must demonstrate that they are competent in written and spoken English. Those failing to meet an acceptable level must take a prescribed course in English provided by this college or by some other provider. For details of courses acceptable to the University of London, please consult the University of London website.

Graduate Entry to the LLB

Holders of a full first degree awarded by an Institution acceptable to the University of London will be automatically considered, when applying for the Graduate Entry Routes (Please note that this only applies to the LLB degree).

Entry Requirements
The following will be considered for graduate entry:

  • Applicants holding a full first degree from a UK university or another European country, or in Australia, South Africa, Canada, Hong Kong, Israel, Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka or the West Indies.
  • Applicants holding a full first degree from an Indian Institute of Technology, a four-year full-time first degree received from a recognised university or a three-year full-time first degree from only a limited number of acceptable universities in India.
  • Applicants with other degrees not listed above should submit their application for consideration. Professional qualifications cannot be considered for graduate entry.
  • Graduate holding a full first degree from regionally accredited institutions in the USA.

You may apply to the University of London at anytime during the year but applications are processed from January to September for non EU and October EU students. The University of London’s deadline for application is October 17, but in order to avoid delay, we strongly recommend that applications are submitted as early as possible.
