CTH Diploma in Tourism Management

Introduction

“Tourism is one of the world’s largest industries, generating an estimated 11% of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP), employing 200 million people and transporting nearly 700 million international travelers per year – a figure that is expected to double by 2020.” – Pro-Poor Tourism: Harnessing the World’s Largest Industry for the World’s Poor (International Institute for Environment & Development, 2001).

Leading indicators all point to an expansion in both demand and provision. Consequently the demand for tourism specialists looks set to continue. The nature of the challenges of the industry means that it is essential that those looking to make a career in it have an understanding of a whole raft of issues ranging from ethical tourism to new technology.

The Diploma in Tourism Management aims to provide students with a broad understanding of the relevant operational aspects of the international tourism industry, together with a knowledge of the basic principles which underpin the industry. Its particular dynamics are often complex and so such a course of study demands a sound understanding of business principles as well as the likes of aspiration and service delivery.

This Diploma has been devised on the basis that students will attend a course of study of not less than 450 hours. Reading around the subject along with private study will be required over and above this figure. Each of the modules has a two and a half hour examination, set and marked by CTH.
