Postgraduate Diploma in Information Systems
“In order to ensure that LCMS students are not placed at a disadvantage when applying for Masters programmes the college will now require IELTS 6.5 for PgDIS. This applies to all new students applying for these programmes at the college except those who have been previously taught via the medium of English.”


This programme is primarily designed for graduate level students who wish to achieve an entry qualification and credits towards an MSc degree in computer science. The programme will also appeal to individuals with relevant employment experience and information technology (IT) skills who need to raise their awareness of modern approaches to the development of information systems.
Additionally, the educational aims of the programme are:
  • to consolidate and extend any first-degree knowledge or employment experience.
  • to refresh those disciplines necessary for intensive study and personal time management.
  • to acquire and enhance basic skills in research techniques and report writing sufficient for entry to postgraduate degree programmes.
  • to develop knowledge in professional issues related to information technology as a means of furthering career progression prospects.
Programme Structure

The Postgraduate Diploma consists of six taught units which normally takes a total of 12 months. This qualification will allow upward progression to the MSC. To achieve the award of Postgraduate Diploma in information systems students will be required to successfully complete the following 6 core units.

Unit-1: Data Analysis & Design
Unit-2: Database Management Systems
Unit-3: Object oriented programming
Unit-4: Professional Issues in Computers
Unit-5: Research Skills
Unit-6: System development Methodologies

Assessment

The programme will be internally assessed by the teaching centre and will be externally verified. Assessment involves investigative assignments, presentations and action research activities.

Entry Requirements

Eligible candidates will be expected to satisfy one of the following requirements:

a.  A recognised and recent university degree in computer science or in a closely related subject.
b. A recognised university degree with evidence of substantial computer literacy.
c. Mature student with extensive responsible employment in the information and communications technology sector and a clear potential for postgraduate studies.

English Language Requirements

Applicants must also satisfy at least one of following requirements for English proficiency:
  • The medium of instruction of applicant’s tertiary studies was in English;
  • A score of 625 or better on the TOFEL;
  • A score 6.5 or better on the IELTS;
  • “A” credit or better in English in the GCE “O” or “A” levels or equivalent; or
  • Any other evidence of proficiency in English acceptable to the Institute Registrar.
